"I MAY NOT APPROVE OF WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY, BUT I WILL DEFEND TO MY DEATH YOUR RIGHT TO SAY IT"What do you think the author of this quote meant by this? How does this apply to the First Amendment? Do you agree with the statement? Should there be limits to what people can say? Why?

What I think the author of the quote meant by this is that he doesn't nessacerally mean he likes what the other person has to say but that he will protect his rights of freedom of speech. It applies to the first amendment by saying that he will protect the other person's first amendment rights. I agree with the statement because I feel the exact same way. I think that there should be some limit to what people can say, but only in the sense that people need to watch what they say around kids. For instance, at the mall I will hear people swear in front of children. In my honest opinion, hearing that in front of children makes me mad. So I think that people should not swear in front of small children. Other than that people should have the free right to say what they want.
I think that the author of the quote was thinking that he may not like what you talk about or have to say, but he will make sure that you have the right to freedom of speech under the first amendment. It applies to the first amendment in the manner that it relates to freedom of speech. I agree with the statement. I think that there should be limits to what people can say because there was a time when I had heard a man drop the f bomb in front of small children, in my honest opinion I think that he should have slapped himself silly doing so because that shows disrespect to the kids. Other than that I would not have a problem with free speech.
The person who first said that was very wise, although he also would have to have been extremely brave as well. His point was that all of us, no matter what we think of one another, have the right to speak our minds and that right must never be taken from anyone. Of course there are some limits to this, as no one would appreciate being called a ******* or a *****. And neither would people appreciate having their lives put in danger because of something someone happened to say.
I believe this person said this because just you don't agree with something that someone else says, doesn't mean they shouldn't say it. Many people everyday say something that others don't agree with, but they still have the right to say it. If other people lost their right to say what they feel, so would we. As long as we aren't talking bad about someone, we should be able to say whatever we want. This way everyone can see the other side of things and maybe they can understand where people are coming from. Freedom of Speech is a needed right, otherwise we could still be living under the Articles of Confederation, and I don't think that anyone wants that...right??
First off, I think that the man who said this was very smart and would stick up for his ideals/beliefs. What I mean is that although he might not think what your saying is right, he still thinks you should have the freedom to say it. I agree with him completely. I think we should have the right to say whatever we want and I also think it shouldn't be limited. It shouldn't be limited by the government or by any other public entity at all. Some people might have some public decency to limit what they say in public or in front of kids, but if they want to say "explicit" words, they should be able to. I think it should however be limited by a private business if they so choose to. It's a private business, they can do whatever they want because you don't have to go there if you don't like how they operate.
I think tht the quote is saying tht although people may not agree with what your saying, you do have the right to still say it

HE is try to say that the person has the right to say what he wants but the author has his right to protcet his rights. If he wants he can disagree with what the person says and not get in trouble for it.

waht i think the auther is saying is that you can say what you want about people but it doesnt make it so. but i think it has limts on it where if you walk into a crowed bilding adn should BOMB. your going to get in huge trouble. but if like go out and start cussing just for the heck of it dont expect anybody to just walk past you without saying something. just because you have a freedom of speech doesnt mean you should abuse it ya know.
i think what the auther means by this is that you have the right to say whatever you like but you dont at the same time for exaple you have the right go out and start cussing up a storm but you dont have the right to walk into a crowed room and yell BOMB! its a whole new level when you mess around with that sort of situation because you dont mess around with the lives of other people and then make a joke of it. thats just stupid but if you walk out in public and just start cussing cus you want to whatever but dont be suprised if you dont get stared at.
I think the author is trying to say that even though he may not like the things that you say doesnt mean that they shouldnt be said and you need to be able to say them. This applies to the first amendment because it is the goverments job to protect the citizens rights and one of those rights is the freedom of speech even though they might not like what you say. I somewhat agree with this. They should be able to say things because it promotes change but some things are just to violent, obscene, and just not appropriate to say. So there should be some limits. I think the framers got it right.
I think that the author is trying to say that even though he doesnt like the things that some people say that doesnt mean that it shouldnt be said. This applies to the first amendment because the government can control part of what we say, but they will always protect our right of speech. I agree with this quote because you do have the right to say whatever you want, but say things that actually have a meaning to it. Some things that people say are really obscure, you just listen to them and your amazed, its like wow!! you really didnt have to say that. I think that as long as what you say has a point in it then you are good...but there are SOME THINGS THAT REALLY SHOULD NOT BE SAID.

I think what the author is trying to say is that even though you may not like the things that the person has said....doesn't mean that they don't have the right to say it. Because you know that someday you're going to say something that somebody else isn't gunna like so you got to protect your rights so that YOU can have a chance to say what you need to say!! Because if you make it so that somebody else can't say what they need to say, then you aren't gunna be able to say what you need to say someday. This follows the freedom os speech in the first amendment. You have the right to say what you want to say. But they can't be like fighting words or slander or anything like that. But at least you have the right to say something!!
I think he meant that he strongly believes in the first amendment and his freedom of speech. And he doesn't just want freedom of speech for himself but for everyone. This quote has to deal with the first amendment because we have the freedom of speech under this amendment and this man is talking about how he is defending the other mans right to say what he wants, no matter who agrees with him. I agree with the statement 100%. It's great to know that this man is not only defending his freedom of speech, but everyone elses as well. Usually people only care about thier own freedom of speech because what they're tyring to say is pertaining to what they think in a positive way, but he's dealing with everyone, whether they agree with him or not. To an extent I think there should be limits on speech in the case of threats on life, or other major things that could potentially break the law. But if you're stating your own opinion I don't think people should be able to limit what you say.
I think the author try to say about that person not prove something they want to say, but they will try do to as much as they can to say what they want to prove that. This is apply the right of speak, and the human right in the First Amendment. I think I agree with this statement, and there is be not limits to what people say because people have the right to say everything they want, and this is a country of freedom.
What i got from this quote was that we're always going to have people that don't agree with us, but just becuase they don't agree doesn't mean we don't have the right to say it. Granet we have limits but within those limits we may say what ever our little hearts desire. SO when someone doesn't like what you said.. Oh well, doesn't matter because you can say it =)
I totally agree with this statement. We were givin the ablilty to communicate for a reason so we should be able to do so.
And yes i think there should be limits as to waht poeple can say and for the most part there is. You don't want someone saying something that could end up being something that turns into an action and hurting someone else.
k i'm done =)
I think this is an awesome quote. The author is showing everyone that yes, what someone may say can affect everyone. Something you may say can affect a whole nation in good or bad. But, it's our freedom to say these things that change people, governments, evil doers, theives you name them, they could be changed by a simple word you or I say. The author is saying that within limits our ability to say what is on our minds is one of the most important rights we as human beings possess. If we could never say what was on our minds if it annoyed people or not; how would we ever function as the United States of America? There would be no 'united' in our title. We'd have to follow every thing the government would make us do without a boo or a bah. How is that humane? The freedom of speech is how our government was formed, how the country is formed and how it continuously changes to become better with the times.
The freedom of speech in the first amendment is one thing that we deffinately need to protect and use to everybodies advantage.
The author of the quote is saying that even if a comment is somewhat disagreeable, he will always protect the right to say it. This quote applies to the first amendment by stating that the right to freedom of speech should be protected and is necessary to society. I partially agree with this statement. Freedom of speech is necessary for change and growth. However, some things are too obscene, disruptive, and violent to say/do. The limits are currently correct. Fighting words, harassment, loud noise, oscenity, and anything that could potentially harm the country and its citizens should be banned.
well i think the author meant that even though you may not agree with what the person has to say you should make sure you respect there right to say it because one day there might be somthing you are trying to say and people dont agree and you want people to give you the respect to say it....it applies to the 1rst admendment by saying that he protects and respects the right to freedom of speech..... i agree with this because i do believe that if you dont respect what other people have to say then when you are saying somthing it will never get heard cause no one has the respect to give you the right to freedom of speech.....i believe everyone should have the right to say what they feel other wise we could end up missing some important lessons andchanges in life
i think what this author meant by this quote was that he didn't like what somebody said but he will never tell them that they don't have the right to say that. This is one of the rights in the first ammendment, freedom of speech, this is a right that everybody has. I think that this is true we may not agree to what people say but they still have the right to say it. There should be some limits to what people say because if not that could cause issues with other citizens but people should be able to say what they think.
I believe that the author is saying he may not necessarily agree with what someone is saying, but he has to let him/her because it their right and it is also a right of his. If he were wanting to take away that one persons right to free speech he would be taking away his own, and if he wants to be able to speak freely he has to fight for that other person no matter what. Just Like I don't like what the Nazis have to say but if I want to be able to speak freely then they have to too.
This statement shows the importance of the first amendment. Although everyone may not agree with something that someone may say, we all should have the right to say whatever we want. I agree with this statement, but also agree there should be restrictions. People will always be offended to a degree with something said, but a lot of offensive material can be avoided if we have some restrictions.

Our opinions are protected by the freedom of speech. As well some people may not agree what we say. We as citizens have the responsibilities to protect but also listin to everyone elses rights and beliefs. I beleif we as people should listen to others in their turn because we will all have a turn to speak our own opinion.
This quote mean that person does not approve something they want to do, but they will prove as much as they can to say everything they want to say. This quote to mean the freedom of speech and human right to the first Amendment. I agree with the statement and there will not be limits to people say something they want because it is a freedom of speech, they can say everything they want

I feel this quote just stands for free speech. The "author" or whoever wrote it truely believes in free speech and wants everyone to have the ability and the right, even if its not what he/she believes.
I think they were saying that people should have the right to say what they want but other people don't have to agree with it. If something bothers somebody then they should just ignore it. It's not that hard to do. You always hear about peole getting revenge for a comment that "hurt their feelings." Well...if you just don't listen to them you won't get yourself in trouble! But I think sometimes there is a limit that shouldn't be crossed.
I think he's saying that people should be able to say what they want but not everyone will agree with what you say. I think people should be a able to say things but to a certain extent because sometimes comments are too rude to say and it's more commonly known to not say them. I also think that if someone says something that "hurts their feelings," it would be easier to just ignore it. It's not that hard!

I think the author is saying that everyone should have the right to say whatever they want even if someone may not like it. There should be limits on what they say though. People shouldn't be able to say harmful words to someone or threat someone.
What I think the author is trying to say is that even though, he/she may not like what is said you still have a right to say it. But in the first amendment you have to go back and think of all your limits of what can be said, or when it could be said. I agree with the quote because we live it everyday. We might not want to hear something that someone has to say but they still have the right to speak their peace.
what i think the author of the quote meant is that even if he doesn't like what people say hes still going to respect there rights and as well as they should respect his rights. But how is it freedom of speech if it has to be limited. I think if you personally want to limit your speech then so be it.
i believe that the author is expressing that he may not agree with everything you may believe and say but he will defend you til the end your right to speak your mind. i completely agree with this statment b/c he is standing up for what everyone has to say. ofcourse there is and shall be a limit to what people say ie: anything that may offend another person b/c of race, religion, etc. like for instance if what you have to say is not nice or appropiate than it should not be said.
I think the author meant that even though he may not agree with what the person is saying, he will protect his right to say it. This is related to the first amendment because it's talking about freedom of speech. I agree with this quote because i see it the same way. Even though someone does'nt agree with another persons opinion, they still have the right to say it.
I think it was referring to the people who don't agree with the military. Even though people say bad stuff about them. They still go and defend are country to protect you rights. People may not like what your saying but your rights will always allow you to do it.
I think he meant that whether you agree with someones opinion or not, it is still their opinion and what they have to say does matter. They have the right to express how they feel and whether he agrees with it or not he knows that it is a right that everyone deserves and he is willing to defend it. I think people have the right to say whatever they want as long as they are not intending to have harm or violence result from what they are saying.
i think that the person who is saying this means we both have rights and we should know and make sure what your talking about and what your trying to defend and this goes on freedom of speech and he or she is trying to say that people might not want to listen but you can say what you want to but that usually happens when you are trying to say something should happen or not. And what else he/she will have something to say back.

to me he meant that he might not always like what people have to say but he still thinks that they should have the right to say what they want and he will do all he can to make sure people remain able to say what they want.
I think people should be able to say whatever they want because its just words and until thinks are put into action than its ok.
In my opinion the author was talking about how we may not a agree with what other people say but everyone should have the right to say what they feel despite whether it was wrong or right, because that's one of our rights guaranteed. The right to free speech and I believe he was just expanding on that and he really believes we all should have that right to say what we want and so what if others don't agree with it. It's your right as a citizen to speak your mind.
To me the author of that quote meant that he may not agree to what the person said, but since the first amendment says that you have the the free speech so the author is going to stand up for that right.
What i think the author is trying to say is that he will protect his freedom of speech. i we should have the freedom of speech and that we should be able to say what ever we want to and not get into trouble for it
Yeah, you can say whatever you feel like unless you end up hurting someone. you shouldnt get mad at someone that is trying to say something, they just trying to speak there mind. Whoever said this has there right to speak and say whats on there mind.
In my opinion i would say the author meant by his quote that he has the right to say what he feels and get away with it as long as it is not threating anyone or anything. The 1st amendment says that we have the right of free speech. This author is defending his rights and everyone else's that is a citizen of America.
I would agree with this quote because I like to give my opinion about things that I care for.
